Pregnancy and birth books and recommendations

Hypnobirthing, Pregnancy and Positive Birth

Reading books about positive birth and how hypnobirthing can really help you achieve the right birth for you.

Here are a few books which I’d recommend from my own personal experience of preparing for birth or some which I’ve found most helpful for my clients:

Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin (Anything by Gaskin is good!)

Secrets of Confident Childbirth by Janay Alexander, Jackie Fletcher and Vanessa Turner

The Gentle Birth Method by Dr. Gowri Motha

Childbirth Without Fear: The Principles and Practice of Natural Childbirth by Grantly Dick-Read

Mindful Hypnobirthing by Sophie Fletcher

HypnoBirthing by Marie Mongan

Why these pregnancy and hypnobirthing books?

Part of feeling and being empowered for positive birth is knowledge and understanding. It’s also about taking this knowledge and only accepting what works for you. We are all difference so I recommend you find the books and resources which suit your style and philosophy. As you look through books, which ones make you feel good about being pregnant and preparing for birth? Stick with those and absorb of what you need.

There are so many great books out there. Sometimes too many to choose from or to know which to start with. When I trained as an Active Birth and antenatal teacher a few years ago I read book after book. Some I liked and some I really didn’t.

Some books focus far too much on pain and medical options. Too much focus on pain and medical options in still the belief that’s what you’ll need. Maybe you won’t so look for balance and feel good. Most of the good books repeat much of the same message and tips but they often come from a different angle so find the tone and message that connects best to you.

Confident Childbirth hypnobirthing: how does it help you and why is it different?
