FAQs about hypnotherapy

Will you hypnotise me?

My aim is to help you create harmony with your own mind, empower you to have more choice in your life and to reconnect with the amazing inner abilities you already have with the mind/body system.
My view is that that we are in and out of ‘trance states’ all the time. Anytime we’re not fully present or consciously choosing exactly what we’re doing. You might think of anxiety or an unwanted habit as types of problem trances and therefore, my aim is to ‘de-hypnotise’ you!! We can also say that all hypnosis is self hypnosis so my aim is to help you create better self hypnosis in your life.

Will I lose control?

No! What you might have seen on TV about hypnosis isn’t what we are doing in hypnotherapy. I’m your guide and you always stay in control even when we do some fun mind experiments. My overall aim is to put you back in charge of your life and empower you.

What if I can't be hypnotised?

Firstly, we take all the pressure off by exploring that trance is something that you do all the time. It’s every day and a natural part of being human.

Anytime you are fully absorbed in something you don’t notice the time going or you didn’t notice someone come into the room, that’s a trance state. Anytime you’re so lost in a daydream you feel you’ve been a million miles away, that was a trance. Often people experience trance when driving and get to their destination without consciously being aware of what they’ve been doing.

Secondly, we can say that your problem involves trance too. If you find yourself reacting in a way you don’t want to or automatically, that’s an unconscious response which we can refer to as a problem trance. You might start to recognise how we are using very hypnotic language to ourselves when we repeat negative self-talk over and over or always talk about ourselves in a certain way. We’ll be working to de-hypnotise you out of those old patterns and reactions.

Some people talk about hypnosis as being deep relaxation. It’s not the same thing but it’s much easier and more pleasant to work with the unconscious mind when you are relaxed. We could do all our work with your eyes open and standing up if you really wanted to.

Hypnosis is a powerful tool we can use but think of it as an experience of exploring your imagination and a state of focus rather than something you need to be put into or something that either happens or doesn’t.

Everyone is different so we’ll explore what works best for you and utilise how your mind works.

What if I don't know how to relax?

This is a great reason to come and see me!

Everyone can go into calm states and the body is designed to relax. However, what works for us as ‘relaxation’ is unique to the what we like and what works for us. We’ll be exploring together what works best for you.

Do you work with kids or teenagers?

No I only work with over 18s. Occasionally I work with 17 year olds with a parent’s consent and if we agree that my approach is the right treatment for their specific issues.

Contact me if you want some recommendations for local therapists who work with kids.

Are there conditions you can't help with?

I cannot work with someone who’s been diagnosed with a brain disorder or epilepsy.

Hypnotherapy isn’t the best approach for those with a history of psychosis or other extreme mental health issues.

It’s preferable that you are not seeing another type of therapist whilst seeing me. This is to make sure you are getting the right focus and making the most of what you are doing.  In some cases I may require contact with your GP before proceeding with any treatment.

I do not work with alcholism or drug addiction as I believe this deserves specialist help.  I can refer you to someone who can help if needed.
